It wasn’t all that long ago that we did a write up on Tesla as an example of a perfectly executed aspirational brand. It was only going to take so long for our commentary and opinion to be further justified. While Tesla has been in the news as of late for its autopilot issues, Musk has managed to deflect much of the bad press by getting people once again excited for the brand and overall vision. First he released his self titled Master Plan for the future, then followed by the unveiling of the gigafactory and simultaneously has made none to subtle hints that there are plans in the works to take on a “microbus” based on the Model X. The immediate reaction on the internet was that the “high passenger-density urban transport” would basically be making a run at the Volkswagen. Jason Torchinsky from Jalopnik did a very nice job of picking apart the rational and hints Tesla has dropped.
By the way, when we use the term “Hippie Bus” that’s a compliment, the VW bus has become an iconic vehicle easily recognizable, devoutly loved by collectors and aficionados. If you do a quick google search its not hard to find old VW buses for sale in $100k range.
